SUMMARY:All School Meeting at the Julia Morgan School for Girls
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJulia Morgan School for Girls was created by a group of educators\, parents\, and members of the community who agreed that East Bay girls would be well-served by the existence of a girls’ middle school. As educators\, they were inspired by the demonstrated successes of an all-girls education; as parents\, they wanted the best for their daughters. The founders believed a girls’ school would enable girls to develop their individual voices and acquire the intellectual and social tools to realize their full potential. \nThe creators of JMSG brought a wide range of expertise in teaching\, education administration\, gender equity\, child psychology\, art\, journalism\, science\, and law. They came together in the fall of 1996 from diverse backgrounds but united in a singular vision—to create an all-girls middle school. \nEach week we highlight an inspirational person at our All School Meeting. On October 22nd we will learn about Julia Morgan\, the architect or our beautiful school building with: \nVictoria Kastner\nAuthor of \nJulia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\nJulia Morgan School for Girls\nc/o Mills College at Northeastern \n5000 MacArthur Boulevard\, #25 – Oakland\, California \nAll School Meeting\nOctober 22\, 2024\n11:50am – 1:00pm\n

SUMMARY:NCCSAH East Bay Julia Morgan Tour
DESCRIPTION:Fall Season Brings NCCSAH East Bay Julia Morgan Tour \nThe NCCSAH has planned a spectacular fall 2022 lecture and tour focusing on the life and architecture of Julia Morgan led by Victoria Kastner\, the historian at Hearst Castle for thirty years. The lecture/ tour will be Thursday\, September 29 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. \nSome will recall that Ms. Kastner led the extraordinary NCCSAH tour of Hearst Castle in November 2015. Her best-selling\, recently published book\, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\, will be available for sale at the tour. The first printing of the book sold out in two weeks. \n\n\n\n\nWe will begin the program with coffee and pastries\, at 9:00 am at the 1930 Berkeley City Club (originally\nknown as the Women’s City Club)\, 2315 Durant Avenue. Victoria Kastner’s talk on Julia Morgan’s life and architecture will begin at 9:30am. At 10:30\, Ms. Kastner will lead a tour of the City Club\, a building of great\nbeauty and dignity\, often referred to as “Julia’s Second Castle.” A short walk takes us to the Hearst Memorial Gymnasium on the UC campus\, a 1927 collaboration of Morgan (who designed the swimming pool\, which we will see) and Bernard Maybeck. \nLunch will be on your own from 12:15 to 1:15 pm (there are many lunch options in the area). \nWe return to the City Club by 1:15\, where a charter bus will take us to the 1908 St. John’s Presbyterian Church (now the Berkeley Playhouse)\, a landmark in the Craftsman Style by Julia Morgan. Thereafter\, we’ll bus to the nearby privately owned 1908 Goddard House to tour the painstakingly restored interior with beautiful period furnishings and light fixtures. \nThe tour will end at about 4:30 pm at the what may be Morgan’s most profound and sublime building\, the Chapel of the Chimes\, in Oakland. The bus brings us back to the City Club. \nLecture/tour fee is $100 for NCCSAH members/$130 for non-members (includes annual NCCSAH membership).

During the first quarter of the 20th century Julia Morgan was the first woman granted an architectural license in California\, the 19th Amendment granting women a constitutional right to vote was ratified by Congress\, and The Monday Club was founded by a dynamic group of women in 1924. Similarly significant contributions by civic-minded women were being made elsewhere in California and in the world. \nVisitors to The Monday Club will enjoy viewing original architectural features including murals\, hardwood herringbone floors and the open truss system that was a recurring element in many of Miss Morgan’s buildings. \nIntegral to appreciating the history of The Monday Club is an understanding of what was occurring elsewhere in our country and the world during this period. On display will be an educational timeline that we have created depicting 100 years of history and events in San Luis Obispo\, California and the world. Interpretive discussion of the timeline will be part of the docent-led tours that will be ongoing throughout the Doors Open event scheduled lecture by a Julia Morgan historian will also be part of the event. \nHosting Organization –\n \nThe Monday Clubhouse Conservancy – https://www.themondayclubslo.org/OUR-HISTORY \nRegister Here \n
