SUMMARY:SWC Preservation Society Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:THE SAUSALITO WOMAN’S CLUB has been a safe haven for trailblazing members who labored to transform the roles of women in our community and our country. These Club members “created a center of thought and action” that opened doors for women to influence Sausalito’s local government. Later\, they worked to see that women were represented on the City Council. They stayed true to their purpose “to preserve the beauty of Sausalito” by creating parks\, preserving trees\, planting flowers\, clearing weeds\, and erecting fountains and park benches. They also successfully fought proposals for canneries\, a highway on fill east of Bridgeway and other developments. \nIn coming to the Club\, the women found both friendship and purpose. They also experienced the power of solidarity in the face of conflict and the joy of celebrating with one another. Some women stayed for a while and moved on; others stayed for a lifetime. \nThe SWC Clubhouse\, which provides the physical center of thought and action\, was finished in 1918. This building stands as a monument to the vision of the Club founders and the talent of California’s first female architect\, Julia Morgan. The Clubhouse is more than a lovely historic landmark in a spectacular setting. It has sheltered the struggles and triumphs of more than a thousand members who work to establish a voice for women in Sausalito and improve the quality of life in our community. \nMembers have made impressive efforts to preserve and maintain the Clubhouse and the traditions that have instilled and inspired leadership\, creativity\, loyalty and friendship. Commitments include the funding of scholarships\, donations to a wide variety of social and environmental causes\, sponsorship of educational and cultural programs\, and support of music\, theatre and art. DESCRIPTION:Victoria Kastner presents Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\n  \nThe Orange County Chapter of CSI is pleased to announce that our keynote speaker for our April 12th Trade Show is author and lecturer Victoria Kastner. She spent three decades as the official historian at Hearst Castle. Her presentation will be about the Hearst Castle’s enigmatic architect\, Julia Morgan. \nVictoria Kastner has always been intrigued by historic buildings and the talented designers and clients who create them. Victoria Kastner took a tour of the Hearst Castle property back in the 1970’s and was told\, “A woman built this\, but we don’t know anything about her.” \nVictoria Kastner wrote\, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect. The biography draws on interviews\, letters\, and newly discovered diaries to reveal Julia Morgan’s inspiring private life. This is the first volume to reveal the story of Julia’s private life–which was as remarkable as the career she forged as the world’s most prominent female architect. This biography also includes never before-seen reflections on Morgan’s faith\, art\, and life experiences. Morgan’s friendship with Hearst\, her passion for California’s landscape\, her struggles with familial dementia\, and her devotion to architecture reveal her to have been a singularly brilliant and determined artist. \nVictoria Kastner authored the definitive trilogy on San Simeon’s history: Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House\, with a foreword by George Plimpton; Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land; and Hearst Ranch: Family\, Land\, and Legacy. Hearst Castle is the most iconic work of her remarkable portfolio. She spent thirty years constructing this opulent estate on the California coast for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Together\, they built a spectacular residence that once hosted the biggest stars of Hollywood’s golden age\, and that now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. \nVictoria Kastner authored “William Randolph Hearst: America’s Maverick Collector” for Oxford University’s Journal of the History of Collections\, and “Morgan and Associates: Julia Morgan’s Architectural Practice as Design Metaphor” for the AIA publication 20 on 20/20 Vision. Her life and career are a story intersecting with the end of the Gilded Age\, both in the style of her architecture and her experiences. A prevailing myth maintains that Morgan destroyed her personal papers. Victoria Kastner\, author of the new biography “Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\,” will refute this legend and reveal the fascinating story of Julia Morgan’s private life\, as well as discuss the architect’s inspiring public career.
