SUMMARY:The Royal Oak Foundation
DESCRIPTION:VICTORIA KASTNER\npresents \nFRED ASTAIRE IN LONDON\nDecember 15\, 2025 \nat \nThe Ebell of Los Angeles\nThough born in Omaha\, Nebraska\, and raised in New York City\, dancer Fred Astaire spent a significant portion of his early career in the United Kingdom. From 1922 to 1932\, he and his sister Adele captivated London audiences in three wildly popular West End musicals\, sparking a sensation so intense that critics dubbed it “Astairia.” During his time in London\, Astaire immersed himself in British culture\, studying music theory at London’s Guildhall School of Music alongside Noël Coward and socializing with the aristocracy. After a decade in London\, Adele retired from the stage to marry Lord Charles Cavendish\, the second son of the Duke of Devonshire\, and moved to Lismore Castle in Ireland. The pair’s decade of dancing and performing in London had an equally profound effect on Fred. With his new dance partner\, Claire Luce\, he expanded his repertoire\, incorporating sweeping\, romantic movements as well as an English sense of style. His impeccable fashion sense\, effortless charm\, and refined elegance—so central to his legendary dance films of the 1930s through the 1950s—were deeply influenced by the customs and style he observed while mingling with British high society and even the royal family. Victoria Kastner will explore the profound impact of Astaire’s years in the UK\, revealing how his time on the London stage helped shape the dancer\, actor\, and icon the world came to adore. \nVictoria Kastner is the leading scholar and author about the architect Julia Morgan as well as about Hearst Castle\, where she worked for 30 years as historian. She is the author of Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House\, published by Harry N. Abrams in 2000; Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land\, May 2009; and Hearst Ranch: Family\, Land and Legacy. She co-authored The Beverly Hills Hotel: The First 100 years with Robert Anderson. In 2022\, Victoria published; Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the trailblazing architect. Ms. Kastner has lectured extensively on Julia Morgan\, Hearst’s art collection\, and the history of collecting for many museums and groups: including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the American Museum in Britain in Bath; and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. She has also written for The London Telegraph\, the American Institute of Architects\, Oxford University’s Journal of the History of Collections\, and The Magazine Antiques.\n \nMore Information to follow.

SUMMARY:The American Country House Foundation\, Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The American Country House Foundation\nwith \nVictoria Kastner\nAuthor of \nJulia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect \nVirtual Lecture for Book Club and Museum Members\nMarch 13\, 2025\n6 p.m. EST\, 3 p.m. PST\nThe American Country House Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the understanding and preservation of country houses across America. No matter the size or style\, we believe that these buildings play an important role in understanding the history of America and enriching our cultural landscape. \n\n\n\nOur educational Lecture Program is designed to expand the public’s knowledge and interaction with country houses. On March 13th\, we are pleased to welcome Victoria Kastner to discuss her biography on architect Julia Morgan. By exploring both Morgan’s work and her life\, Victoria weaves a captivating tale about courage\, vision\, and resilience.\n \n\n\n\nJulia Morgan was a lifelong trailblazer. She was the first woman admitted to study architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the first licensed to practice architecture in California. Over the first half of the 20th century\, she left an indelible mark on the American West. Of her remarkable 700 creations\, the most iconic is Hearst Castle. Morgan spent thirty years constructing this opulent estate on the California coast for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst—forging a lifelong friendship and creative partnership with him. Together\, they built a spectacular and unequalled residence that once hosted the biggest stars of Hollywood’s golden age\, and that now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. \nVictoria Kastner’s compelling biography draws on interviews\, letters\, and Morgan’s diaries\, including never-before-seen reflections on faith\, art\, and her life experiences. Morgan’s friendship with Hearst\, her passion for California’s landscape\, her struggles with familial dementia\, and her devotion to architecture reveal her to have been a singularly brilliant and determined artist. \nBook Club & Museum Members\, please join us on March 13th at 6 p.m. EST or 3 p.m. PST. \nDetails to follow.

SUMMARY:All School Meeting at the Julia Morgan School for Girls
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJulia Morgan School for Girls was created by a group of educators\, parents\, and members of the community who agreed that East Bay girls would be well-served by the existence of a girls’ middle school. As educators\, they were inspired by the demonstrated successes of an all-girls education; as parents\, they wanted the best for their daughters. The founders believed a girls’ school would enable girls to develop their individual voices and acquire the intellectual and social tools to realize their full potential. \nThe creators of JMSG brought a wide range of expertise in teaching\, education administration\, gender equity\, child psychology\, art\, journalism\, science\, and law. They came together in the fall of 1996 from diverse backgrounds but united in a singular vision—to create an all-girls middle school. \nEach week we highlight an inspirational person at our All School Meeting. On October 22nd we will learn about Julia Morgan\, the architect or our beautiful school building with: \nVictoria Kastner\nAuthor of \nJulia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\nJulia Morgan School for Girls\nc/o Mills College at Northeastern \n5000 MacArthur Boulevard\, #25 – Oakland\, California \nAll School Meeting\nOctober 22\, 2024\n11:50am – 1:00pm\n

SUMMARY:The Royal Oak Foundation Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Oak Foundation\nThe Royal Oak Foundation seeks to raise awareness of and advance the work of the National Trust of England\, Wales\, and Northern Ireland by inspiring support from the United States for the Trust’s efforts to preserve
and protect historic places and spaces—for ever\, for everyone. \nPlease join us for \n“A Collector’s Country House: William Randolph Hearst”\nwith \nVictoria Kastner\nZoom Webinar (Live)\nApril 16\, 2024\n6:00-7:00 p.m. (ET)\nClick HERE for Tickets.\nWhen Winston Churchill visited William Randolph Hearst’s estate at San Simeon during Churchill’s 1929 California tour\, he was pleasantly surprised. Though he had been expecting “a Monte Carlo casino perched atop the Rock of Gibraltar\,” he found instead a stunning country house and an intriguing host. Hearst was an art collector in the 18th-century English tradition. Like William Beckford and Horace Walpole\, Hearst personally selected every object in his vast collection\, and determined its location. For 28 years\, Julia Morgan—the first female architect to gain worldwide prominence—worked right beside him creating La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill)\, as it was formally known. \nAt San Simeon\, Hearst blended English country house traditions with Californian informalities. Charlie Chaplin\, Cary Grant\, and all the Hollywood set rubbed elbows with Calvin Coolidge and Bernard Shaw. Presiding as hostess was Hearst’s companion\, the actress Marion Davies. The end result was a quintessentially American country house with English style gardens: built by a media mogul\, designed by a woman architect\, presided over by a Hollywood starlet\, and forever immortalized by a film—Orson Welles’s brooding Citizen Kane. Victoria Kastner will discuss Hearst’s extensive art collection—Renaissance tapestries\, Mediterranean furniture\, English silver\, and architectural fragments galore—and provide lively anecdotes about the hilltop\, in this examination of America’s most glamorous country house and estate. \nVictoria Kastner is a leading scholar and author about the architect Julia Morgan as well as about Hearst Castle\, where she worked for 30 years and was the historian. She is the author of Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House\, with a foreword by George Plimpton\, published by Harry N. Abrams in 2000; Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land\, May 2009; and Hearst Ranch: Family\, Land and Legacy. She co-authored The Beverly Hills Hotel: The First 100 Years with Robert Anderson. In 2022\, Victoria published Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect. Ms. Kastner has lectured extensively on Julia Morgan\, Hearst’s art collection\, and the history of collection for many museums and groups: including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the American Museum in Britain in Bath; and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. She has also written about Hearst\, San Simeon\, and Morgan for The London Telegraph\, the American Institute of Architects\, Oxford University’s Journal of the History of Collections\, and The Magazine Antiques.

SUMMARY:"Back in Bloom" 2023 Garden Tour at The Virginia Robinson Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Don’t Miss the Garden Party of the Year: “Back in Bloom” 2023 Garden Tour and Showcase House Awaits You!\n  \nThe Friends of Robinson Gardens is very pleased to present its long-anticipated Garden Tour\, now open to the public on May 20\, 2023\, at The Virginia Robinson Gardens\, co-chaired by past President Betty Goldstein\, Elaine Stein\, and Nicole Antoine. The romantic theme\, “Back in Bloom\,” along with the invitation was conceived by co-chair Elaine. It celebrates a new beginning and the return to VRG’s beloved Garden Tour after a three-year hiatus. Betty explained\, “This is our premier fundraiser where funds are raised for the restoration needs of the estate and the Children’s Science program which has served more than 5\,000 children throughout the pandemic years\, keeping Mrs. Robinson’s legacy for the welfare of children alive. We are excited to be able to have this event again and hope you can join us. Tickets will be available on our website soon. See you there!” \nConsidered the most glamorous fundraiser of its kind in Southern California\, the tour will feature four magnificent private gardens to visit as well as the historic gardens at Robinson Gardens. Maralee Beck said\, “We are happily ‘Back in Bloom’: the blessed rains have helped the parched earth\, and the four private gardens – and our own VRG – have emerged verdant\, fruitful\, and also a-bloom in art & architecture.” \nBack at the estate\, built in 1911\, a truly gorgeous sight to behold is the transformation of select rooms of the main house into visions of enchanting beauty by top florists.  A not-to-be-missed highlight of the event\, the floral designers’ inspiring creations conjure a “feast for the soul.” \nThis year\, the Friends are proud to honor famed author and former historian of the Hearst Castle Victoria Kastner as the Grand Marshal. She will be signing her new book\, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\, already in its third printing. An inspiring and fascinating speaker who is passionate about her subjects\, Victoria has generously given many lectures at Robinson Gardens to mesmerized audiences about Hearst Castle\, William Randolph Hearst\, and Fred Astaire\, among other topics. \n\n\n\nCulinary delights are another favorite part of this elegant garden party. Under a tent on the Great Lawn\, Sean Murphy Catering & Events will be serving a sumptuous luncheon. (Sean’s father\, Jimmy Murphy\, was the owner of the iconic and elegant restaurant Jimmy’s in Beverly Hills\, which closed in 2000.) Adding to the delectable feast\, Joss Cuisine\, an exceptional Chinese restaurant\, will be offering tantalizing bites in the Kitchen. The signature coconut cake will also be served in the luscious display of desserts in the Pool Pavilion\, along with a plethora of cookies\, the Ivy’s iconic chocolate chip cookies and Red Velvet Cake\, and the very popular and exquisite chocolates from and Sons Chocolatiers. \nTickets will be available on our website soon. See you there!” \n

SUMMARY:SWC Preservation Society Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:THE SAUSALITO WOMAN’S CLUB has been a safe haven for trailblazing members who labored to transform the roles of women in our community and our country. These Club members “created a center of thought and action” that opened doors for women to influence Sausalito’s local government. Later\, they worked to see that women were represented on the City Council. They stayed true to their purpose “to preserve the beauty of Sausalito” by creating parks\, preserving trees\, planting flowers\, clearing weeds\, and erecting fountains and park benches. They also successfully fought proposals for canneries\, a highway on fill east of Bridgeway and other developments. \nIn coming to the Club\, the women found both friendship and purpose. They also experienced the power of solidarity in the face of conflict and the joy of celebrating with one another. Some women stayed for a while and moved on; others stayed for a lifetime. \nThe SWC Clubhouse\, which provides the physical center of thought and action\, was finished in 1918. This building stands as a monument to the vision of the Club founders and the talent of California’s first female architect\, Julia Morgan. The Clubhouse is more than a lovely historic landmark in a spectacular setting. It has sheltered the struggles and triumphs of more than a thousand members who work to establish a voice for women in Sausalito and improve the quality of life in our community. \nMembers have made impressive efforts to preserve and maintain the Clubhouse and the traditions that have instilled and inspired leadership\, creativity\, loyalty and friendship. Commitments include the funding of scholarships\, donations to a wide variety of social and environmental causes\, sponsorship of educational and cultural programs\, and support of music\, theatre and art. The Club continues to serve the Sausalito community by hosting elections\, candidate forums\, performances and other events that are open to the public. \nPlease join us for this exciting SWC Preservation Society fundraiser to preserve our Julia Morgan Clubhouse. \nJulia Morgan: An Intimate \nBiography of the Trailblazing Architect\nWith author Victoria Kastner on\nApril 27\, 2023\, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM\,\nAt the Sausalito Women’s Club\n120 Central Avenue\, Sausalito\, CA\nClick here to register. \n

SUMMARY:OCCCSI 2023 Trade Show
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Kastner presents Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\n  \nThe Orange County Chapter of CSI is pleased to announce that our keynote speaker for our April 12th Trade Show is author and lecturer Victoria Kastner. She spent three decades as the official historian at Hearst Castle. Her presentation will be about the Hearst Castle’s enigmatic architect\, Julia Morgan. \nVictoria Kastner has always been intrigued by historic buildings and the talented designers and clients who create them. Victoria Kastner took a tour of the Hearst Castle property back in the 1970’s and was told\, “A woman built this\, but we don’t know anything about her.” \nVictoria Kastner wrote\, Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect. The biography draws on interviews\, letters\, and newly discovered diaries to reveal Julia Morgan’s inspiring private life. This is the first volume to reveal the story of Julia’s private life–which was as remarkable as the career she forged as the world’s most prominent female architect. This biography also includes never before-seen reflections on Morgan’s faith\, art\, and life experiences. Morgan’s friendship with Hearst\, her passion for California’s landscape\, her struggles with familial dementia\, and her devotion to architecture reveal her to have been a singularly brilliant and determined artist. \nVictoria Kastner authored the definitive trilogy on San Simeon’s history: Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House\, with a foreword by George Plimpton; Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land; and Hearst Ranch: Family\, Land\, and Legacy. Hearst Castle is the most iconic work of her remarkable portfolio. She spent thirty years constructing this opulent estate on the California coast for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Together\, they built a spectacular residence that once hosted the biggest stars of Hollywood’s golden age\, and that now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. \nVictoria Kastner authored “William Randolph Hearst: America’s Maverick Collector” for Oxford University’s Journal of the History of Collections\, and “Morgan and Associates: Julia Morgan’s Architectural Practice as Design Metaphor” for the AIA publication 20 on 20/20 Vision. She has a master’s degree in Public History with a specialty in architectural history from UC Santa Barbara\, and a master’s degree in museum management from George Washington University. \nWe’ll See You at the Trade Show!\nA robust product showcase\, the latest construction industry innovations and more await you at the annual Orange County Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute Trade Show.  This is an invitation only event.  Please click here for more information.
