SUMMARY:The Preservation Society of Newport County\, Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The year 2022 marks the sesquicentennial of pioneering architect Julia Morgan (1872-1957). Though best known as the designer of William Randolph Hearst’s lavish San Simeon estate (1919)\, Morgan built an additional 700 structures throughout the west. Her life and career are a story intersecting with the end of the Gilded Age\, both in the style of her architecture and her experiences. A prevailing myth maintains that Morgan destroyed her personal papers. Victoria Kastner\, author of the new biography “Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect\,” will refute this legend and reveal the fascinating story of Julia Morgan’s private life\, as well as discuss the architect’s inspiring public career. The virtual lecture will take place on Thursday\, April 14 at 6:00 pm EST\, 3:00 pm PST. \nOur virtual lectures are free and registration will be open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Julia Morgan: A Very Personal View \nVictoria Kastner will reveal the inspiring story of Julia Morgan’s private life\, as gleaned from the letters Julia exchanged with her family and friends\, as well as from the observations she wrote in her private diaries. In this presentation\, customized for the Hillside Club\, Kastner will provide an especially in-depth and intimate view of this famous architect. \nMs. Kastner will be calling on the materials she researched for her just-released book: Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect (Chronicle Books\, 2022)\, which provides the first in-depth look at Morgan’s fascinating private life as well as her remarkable professional career. Copies of this volume will be available for purchase that evening\, and Ms. Kastner will be available to sign copies of any books purchased at the Club. \nThis Fireside Meeting will take place in person at the Hillside Club.
