The year 2022 marks the sesquicentennial of pioneering architect Julia Morgan (1872-1957). Though best known as the designer of William Randolph Hearst’s lavish San Simeon estate (1919), Morgan built an additional 700 structures throughout the west. Her life and career are a story intersecting with the end of the Gilded Age, both in the style of her architecture and her experiences. A prevailing myth maintains that Morgan destroyed her personal papers. Victoria Kastner, author of the new biography “Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect,” will refute this legend and reveal the fascinating story of Julia Morgan’s private life, as well as discuss the architect’s inspiring public career.
