Classes at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art

Before she left for Paris to study architecture in 1896, Julia took classes at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, located inside this elaborate Nob Hill mansion. Built in 1878, it was donated to the University of California in 1893. After the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed the building, it was replaced by the present Mark Hopkins Hotel.
