Julia occasionally allowed herself a day of sightseeing, amidst her strenuous preparations for the École des Beaux-Arts’ entrance exams. On Easter Sunday in 1897, she showed a young female visitor around Paris. Julia took her to her favorite spot in the city, the bell towers of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, and wrote on April 29, 1897: “Easter was a beautiful day – with clouds chasing over the blue all day, just right for the favorite treat of going up on top the Notre Dame Tower. . . . The bells frightened a young lady with me, one who had brought a letter from England, and had only this day to spend in Paris.”
