Julia Morgan lived very near the Palais du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Palace), located within the Jardin du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Gardens), created by Marie de Medici in the early 17th century. Julia went there frequently, writing to her cousin Lucy LeBrun and Lucy’s husband Pierre on 4 October 1896: “Every time I see the men ‘clucking’ to the birds in the Luxemburg [sic] till they come to eat out of their hands, I think of you. They are the tamest little creatures, and the fattest!” (The Julia Morgan Collection, 010, Special Collections and University Archives, Robert E.
