During her first two years in Paris, Julia was often lonely. Her life improved in the fall of 1898, when her younger brother Avery joined her in studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts. Unlike his sister, Avery never scored high enough on his entrance exams to be formally admitted into the program. Nevertheless, he lived with her in Paris for two years, which greatly lifted her spirits. Julia wrote to their New York cousins, soon after Avery’s arrival: “He is the kindest fellow always, and you can hardly imagine how different it makes the life here.”
