In the summer of 1895, Julia’s mother Eliza urged her to join the group of girls Eliza was chaperoning on their rustic vacation in Felton, six miles from Santa Cruz. Julia’s sister Emma and several members of their sorority were having a marvelous time in the outdoors: “The Girls are very happy . . If you could come down Friday night ([on] the afternoon train) and stay over Sunday – You’d like it – try to come.”
